A Good Book, from Victor Niederhoffer. Invention by Design; How Engineers Get from Thought to Thing. But I have not lost my interest in engineering. I remember reading “To Engineer Is Human: The Role of Failure in Successful Design” a long while ago and the take home lesson for me was we have to learn from our failures. And this is, therefore, a matter of social/transactional design! The work continues a theme from other books he's published, such as “Success through Failure: The Paradox of Design” in 2006 and “To Engineer Is Human: The Role of Failure in Successful Design” in 1992. I would recommend reading “Success through Failure: The Paradox of Design” and “To Engineer Is Human: The Role of Failure in Successful Design” by Henry Petronius, an accomplished author and civil engineer. One of my favourite authors is Henry Petroski, whose book To Engineer is Human - The Role of Failure in Successful Design led me to read anything he publishes. Brilliant analysis of engineering "failure" and learning. You didn't mention Petroski's To Engineer is Human: The Role of Failure in Successful Design. A good book to put engineering in perspective is To Engineer is Human: The Role of Failure in Successful Design and others by Petroski. I've been reading a popular text on engineering by Henry Petroski, To Engineer is Human: The Role of Failure in Successful Design (1982/1992). In fact, direct copying of biological organisms can lead to poor, or even disastrous, engineering designs. The moral of this book is that behind every great engineering success is a trail of often ignored (but frequently spectacular) engineering failures. Recently I read a compelling book published in the 1980′s called To Engineer Is Human. Consider all the failed attempts humans made to fly by building contraptions with flapping wings. Success through Failure: The Paradox of Design.
